Computerization and Changing Career Opportunities

Hospitals, of necessity, have always placed a considerable emphasis on credentialing. As a result, career opportunities are restricted by areas of specialization, and opportunities for advancement are relatively limited. Hospitals do not have well-developed internal labor markets. Clerks may not aspire to be laboratory technicians nor laboratory technicians, radiologists—at least not without returning to school for special training. It is unlikely that computerization will alter this situation. In fact the tendency for computerization to upgrade work is likely to promote an even greater tendency toward credentialing.

One change may well lie in the area of management, however. The new stress on professional management is likely to open up new career opportunities because the increased demand for able professionals will in all likelihood bring higher pay and status. Moreover, the career ladders are likely to be longer as larger health delivery organizations come to play a more important role. This was the case in HCA, where young managers enjoyed considerable opportunity for promotion. Yet once again the emphasis is on professionalism. The new managers require special training in hospital administration and/or computer science. It is unlikely that low-rung administrative personnel will find opportunities to advance to the higher ranks. Again, we find that for those with meager educational achievement, computerization limits their opportunities for both entry and advancement.
